Day 9: Saddest Game Scene

META: I’ve been at this for over a week at this point, and despite struggling to dedicate as much time as I’d have liked to it, It’s been fun. Some of the questions are a little tough to answer, not least because I think they ask more of games than most games are able to give, but it’s been interesting at the least. Finally a warning about today’s post: There are spoilers ahead. Nothing until after the games title image though. Consider yourselves warned.

My nomination for Saddest Game Scene goes to: Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons – Funeral/Final Scene

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is a game about growing up. You take control of two brothers who set out on an epic adventure to save their ailing father from a disease that would likely kill him if you fail.

The twist? As you progress towards the end of the game something happens. The elder brother dies. It’s a sudden, emotionally devastating and incredible well handled moment that elevates both what has already come, and what is yet to come. It makes the hours you’ve spent hating the control scheme worth it, as suddenly it all makes sense.

The death scene isn’t my nomination. As raw and emotionally charged as burying your brother is, it was the final cut scene of the game that ruined me.

My words wouldn’t do it justice, so I’ll leave a link below.

  1. This game was beautiful – so emotional. The bit where you’re the younger brother and you now have to swim on your own, and the controls change…
